The climax of this Triduum will be the Solemn Mass at Anjuna his birthplace at 4 pm, to be presided over by Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao.
At Anjuna, the Novena has already begun. On January 21, there will be a procession from St John the Baptist Chapel, Gaumvaddi and the Mass will begin at 4 pm.
There will be also celebrations in all places where Venerable Agnelo had worked at Shiroda, Sanvordem, Rachol and Kumata in Karwar Diocese.
According to Br Eusebio Miranda, sfx, the Archdiocese of Goa celebrated his Birth Centenary with great devotion in 1969.
“The Vice Postulator, late Fr Protacio Soares toured most parishes and chapels in Goa with great ardour. A monument to the memory of Ven Agnelo, as a son of Bardez, was erected in the compound of Mapusa Parish Church (near the Capela-mor) and inaugurated by Fr Agnelo’s nephew, Fr Feliciano de Souza.”
“A Solemn Eucharistic Celebration was held at Pilar on January 21, 1969 and people from all over Goa came to Pilar. Then Apostolic Administrator Bishop Francisco da Piedade Rebello celebrated the Mass in the Seminary Chapel while the President of “Cabido” Chapter of the Se Cathedral, Canon Msgr. Agapito Lowrenço preached an inspiring homily.”
“Bishop Francisco da Piedade Rebello said Fr Agnelo was a living embodiment of the life and spirit of the missionary Society of Pilar. A unique meeting of the Bishop, Priests and people was organized in the Seminary Auditorium after the Mass,” said Br Miranda.
Fr Tony Fernandes sfx, Vice Postulator for the Cause of Fr Agnelo de Souza, added that on January 10, 1939, Fr Agnelo’s remains were brought from Rachol to Pilar.
“A few months later, precisely on July 2, 1939, the decrepit and dying Society was reorganized by a band of young and dynamic six priests and two lay-brothers. It is an occasion for us to recall to mind the very first prophecy made by Fr. Agnel that the Pilar Society would not die.”
“This is an occasion for us to thank and praise God for the good work that God is doing through our Pilar Society.”
“Let us all raise our voices once again and pray that Holy Mother the Church may soon declare him Saint, thus our Goan Church may have its second Saint for us to emulate their holy examples,” Fr Fernandes added.
